For years, glass ionomers and amalgams have been used successfully within their indications as filling materials. Nonetheless, there is a considerable demand for alternative filling materials. The main reasons include the low flexural strength of glass ionomers, the intrinsic grey colour of amalgam and the fact that amalgam contains mercury as one of its components.
The product Cention N from Ivoclar Vivadent is a bioactive filling material which has been developed in direct response to the global initiative established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to reduce the use of mercury. Cention N is an adequate and inexpensive alternative to amalgam and glass ionomer materials in restorative dentistry.
Innovative, long-lasting and simple to use, Cention N offers tooth-coloured esthetics together with high flexural strength providing the clinician an outstanding resistance to fracture of restorations. The integrated and patented alkaline filler increases the release of hydroxide ions to regulate the pH value during acidic attacks. Simultaneously the release of large numbers of fluoride and calcium ions on demand forms a sound basis for the remineralization of the enamel structure.
The initiator system enables excellent chemical self-curing ability. This innovative and bioactive new powder-liquid filling material is suitable for the placement of permanent Class I and II restorations in the posterior region. Cention N can be optionally cured with light in the wavelength range of 400-500 nm.
Cention N is remarkably simple to use. The product is suitable for application without an adhesive in retentively prepared cavities. In the case of insufficient retentive cavities Cention N is used in conjunction with an adhesive.
The novel bioactive powder-liquid restorative material is intended to be manually mixed: Dosing, mixing, filling as full volume replacement (without layering) and finishing (adjustment of occlusion) are required.
